Take a gamble on this destination.
Known as the Vegas of China, the Macau Special Administrative Region does have its share of gambling and glitz, but deeper than that, the city blends cultures that date back hundreds of years. A Portuguese colony for more than 300 years, with the handover to China in 1999, it is a city of blended cultures where ancient Chinese temples sit on streets paved with traditional Portuguese tile.
The old city center grounds the Macau Peninsula, where colonial ruins sit next to arty new boutiques. Farther south are the islands of Taipa, Cotai and Coloane each with its own treasure: Taipa has gloriously preserved Macanese architecture, Cotai hosts the new mega casinos, and Coloane offers picturesque colonial villages and beaches.
Macau is often considered a slower-paced version of Hong Kong. It has elements of a bustling city, but with a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Portuguese egg tarts are a popular local snack.
Parking is a premium. The cost for one space can be upwards of $125,000 USD
Stanley Ho Hung Sun is the "King of Gambling" and resides in Macau.
