Holi is one of India’s most globally visible holidays.  Beyond the well-known images, what is the celebration about?

The festival is the second largest for the Hindu religion.  It marks the beginning of Spring and dates back at least to the 4th century. There is also strong religious and mythology reasons behind the rituals and event.  Typical activities include splashing each other with the colors of Spring, special dishes made to enjoy at dinner and spending time with family and friends.

Holi celebrations break down barriers. There is no differentiation between old and young, rich and poor, Hindu and non-Hindu.  Everyone joins together in the joyous festivities.  Even enemies are supposed to forget their situation in the name of renewed friendship.

Holi Message

One of the underlying messages of the multiple underlying myths that serve as a basis for Holi is that of good overcoming evil.  That powerful message is both timeless and timely.
